Introduction
The tale of Tsar Saltan, based on Pushkin’s poem of the same name and composed for the author’s centenary, is presented here in a resplendent production by Russia’s oldest musical institution. An old-fashioned Russian treat, it is filled with colourful music, including the famous Flight of the Bumblebee.

Tsar Saltan marries the youngest of three sisters, but the jealous other two bring about her banishment with her son. The tsar hears from sailors of a wondrous island, resolving to visit it. Upon arriving he is met by Guidon, not realising he is his son. The swan-princess, to whom Guidon is engaged, appears with the tsar’s long-lost wife. All is revealed, the sisters are forgiven, and everyone celebrates the forthcoming wedding.
