Description:
Blue Train is the second studio album by John Coltrane, released in 1957 on Blue Note Records, catalog BLP 1577. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, it is Coltrane's second solo album, As a leader, and the only one he conceived personally for the label. It has been certified a gold record by the RIAA.
He was in the midst of Coltrane's residency at the Spot as a member of the Thelonious Monk quartet. The personnel include Coltrane's once and the future Miles Davis bandmates, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, both of whom had played on pianist Kenny Drew's trio album on Riverside Records the year before. Both trumpeter Lee Morgan and trombonist Curtis Fuller were up-and-coming jazz musicians, and both would be members of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, working together on Blakey's acclaimed Indesctructible album among others.
All of the compositions were written by Coltrane, with the exception of the standard "I'm Old Fashioned." The title track is a long, rhythmically variegated blues with a sentimental minor theme that gradually shifts to major during the Coltrane's first chorus. "Locomotion" is also a blues riff tune, in forty-four-bar form. During a 1960 interview, Coltrane described the Blue Train as his own.
Mastered by Alan Yashida, alternate takes Mastered by Robert Vosgien at Capitol Mastering.
Quote
Two years ago, we decided to begin remastering the jewels of the Blue Note catalog in hi-def resolutions of 96k and 192k. In order to develop a guiding art philosophy for this delicate endeavor, we donned our lab coats, ran dozens of sonic experiments and carefully referenced every generation of our reissues. Ultimately, we decided that our goal would be to protect the original intentions of the artists, producers and engineers who made these records and that, in the case of the pre-digital-era albums, these intentions were best represented by the sound and feel of Their first-edition vinyl releases. Working with a team of dedicated and groovy engineers, we found a sound that both took the feel of the original records while maintaining the depth and transparency of the master tapes ... the new remasters are really cool! --Don Was, President, Blue Note Records
