　　卓别林自小与母亲相依为命，虽然母亲在小舞台上做歌舞演出，但收入很少。卓别林也进入了演艺界，并且受到欢迎。不过他不以此为满足，又到美国发展，从此与电影结下不解之缘。他丰富的肢体语言使他在整个默片时代成为备受瞩目的风云人物。这期间他分别与三位女士有过密切交往并结为夫妻，但都以离婚告终。 1942年，他遇到乌娜·奥尼尔，她成为他第四任妻子和终身伴侣。影片叙述卓别林受政治迫?害，移居瑞士，1972年才回到美国。展示了这位大师起伏的一生，并穿插了几部经典作品的拍摄经过。

　　英国著名导演理查德·阿顿巴罗制片和执导的大型历史人物传奇片《卓别林》，改编自查尔斯·卓别林的《 我的自传》。“我是查利·卓别林的崇拜者，”阿顿巴罗说，“但是我希望影片不至于过于谄媚，如否认他的身材矮小等。我希望影片反映他人格的两方面――包括他令人崇敬、喜爱和令人不悦的一面。”为挑选扮演卓别林的人选，阿顿巴罗考了二十多个男演员，挑选了其中七人试演。唐尼符合导演的一切要求。当他穿上流浪汉的服装时，看上去特别像卓别林。他具有卓别林的性格、恶作剧和幽默感。当影片与公众见面时，唐尼完全可与好莱坞大明星相提并论。
