My boyfriend is terrified of spiders so our group of friends planned the "perfect" prank for him by getting him to the movie night under false pretenses and then surprising him with this movie. He sat stone faced through the entire thing and didn't get scared at all, but everyone else (who planned the thing and knew what we were watching) got freaked out. It's still a great movie though, because apparently we were screaming so loud our college's campus safety heard us and came to check. We also thought we cleaned all the popcorn that spilled from a particular jump scare, but one of our friends on custodial said they still found some, so based on the volume of our screams and the distance of which popcorn flew, it was successful.

Arachnophobia (1990). I'd been really pushing this movie for family movie night for quite some time, and my oldest kept kind of balking at it. Finally, we watched it and he loved it, even said it was one of his top ten movies ever. It was great sitting next to him because Arachnophobia totally got him with jump scares; he musta jumped and yelped like five times. Anyway, I've always enjoyed Arachnophobia, which, like all spider-based movies, begins with a mystery that the characters must solve, though we as viewers get to see it play out. Why are all of these people dying suddenly? What's happening to the town pets? Where the heck are the crickets all of a sudden? I do appreciate the implication that spiders, even death spiders, still start with their natural prey before turning to humans. Also, I love me some Julian Sands, who couldn't be more delightful here as the entomologist Atherton. There's a moment where they are discussing quarantining the town and Atherton's all like "I'll be the judge of that!" Yeah, I'm sure, as an entomologist, the town is looking to you for guidance. Anyway, good fun that mixes real spiders with fake, and that I believe had a minimal death count. The cutaways make clear that they were working hard not to hurt anybody. Also, when Jeff Daniels is trying to find the main spider, we get a shot of three of her eyes up close with the flames from Daniels's makeshift flamethrower reflected in them, which, in addition to being a beautiful shot is what, like an homage to Blade Runner? In a Spider movie? Nice. Tons of fun and featuring some really beautiful spiders, the greatest animals on Earth.

Who is gonna do it now? Not me. Still, no regrets in watching this classic again and introducing it to my scaredy cat kids.
